How the mesh to micron converter works
The converter works as a mesh to micron calculator and in reverse, from micron to mesh. A value entered in any unit (mesh, micron, millimetre, inch or thou) is returned in every other unit, together with the nearest standard sieves above and below and the equivalent wedge wire slot.
- Length units convert exactly: 1 mm is 1,000 microns, 1 inch is 25,400 microns and 1 thou (mil) is 25.4 microns.
- Mesh is a sieve number, not a unit of length. The converter uses the opening of each sieve in the ASTM E11 US standard sieve series, from 4 mesh (4,750 microns) to 635 mesh (20 microns).
- Between listed sieves, the mesh value is interpolated on a logarithmic scale and shown as approximate, because no standard sieve exists at that size.
Worked example: 100 mesh to micron
On the chart, a 100 mesh sieve has a nominal opening of 150 microns, which is 0.15 mm or 0.0059 inch. The nearest coarser sieve is 80 mesh (180 microns) and the nearest finer sieve is 120 mesh (125 microns).
Mesh and wedge wire slot
A woven mesh is described by the number of wires per inch, while a wedge wire screen is described by its slot, the gap between two profile wires at the face. The wedge wire equivalent of 100 mesh is therefore a 150 micron (0.15 mm) slot, and SIMO Screens manufactures slots from 25 microns to 25 mm.
The full mesh to micron conversion chart follows the tool. The mesh to micron guide explains how mesh relates to slot size, and the slot and open area guide covers slot selection.
